SOES‘ World Literacy Day Dinner was held on Thursday 6th September 2012 at The Apprentice Restaurant at TAFE Ultimo. World Literacy Day, which actually falls on the 8th of September every year, is a United Nations initiative designed to raise people’s awareness of and concern for literacy issues in the world. This year’s observance focuses on the empowering role of literacy. At our Dinner, which was also a fundraiser for our school project in South Sudan, forty people were in attendance. It was a most enjoyable and intellectually stimulating night.
In a special address, Dr Keiko Yasukawa, President of the New South Wales Adult Literacy and Numeracy Council spoke about the importance of literacy.
Also in attendance were Glenn Brookes Member of Parliament, representing the Premier of New South Wales Barry O’Farrell; Geoffrey Grasso, Chief Advisor to Mr. Brookes; Darryl Griffin and Jill Rohrer, Director and Assistant Director for the Maryanne St Cluster, Ultimo TAFE; and Tom Zubrycki, one of Australia’s finest documentary film makers. Other invitees who were unfortunately unable to attend the Dinner sent their apologies. We thank the mentioned guests and those who couldn’t make it for the interest that they have shown in the work of SOES.
From ticket sales for the Dinner, a raffle undertaken on the night (the prize was dinner for two at an African restaurant) and a silent auction, SOES was able to add $1,400 to our school project coffers.
SOES would like to acknowledge the generous contributions to our silent auctions by our good friends:
